I think they may well have been - although, of course, mediaeval bestiary lore, and exegesis generally, tended to sieze on one point of similarity and run with it. A bit like metaphysical poetry, really.

All the same, I'm not sure when and where weasels acquired their bad rep - which seems very undeserved!
