Yes: my great-great-aunt was always very proud of the fact that her brains allowed her to pass the leaving exam a year early, and go and work in the mill - because she was the eldest child, her mother was dead, and they needed the money.

Bunter's a good comparison, and illustrates the problem nicely.

but do the posters say to themselves “I mustn’t make judgements; she could be a time-traveller” before making likely assumptions about people in times of stress.

That could lead to all sorts of interesting consequences (particularly 'interesting' in the apocryphal Chinese sense...)
