Note to self: reading the comments on articles at CiF about Fr Jeffrey John, Southwark, etc, is an even worse idea than reading CiF comments usually is, as it will leave you with the overwhelming desire to punch someone.

He's the gay candidate for a bishopry in the Anglican Church, isn't he? I can imagine that the CiF comments will be full of both homophobic idiots and smug atheists who like basking in the glow of their own perceived superiority.

I have also found out recently that it doesn't matter the comment section of which online German paper I read when it comes to discussing the gender paygap. They are all full of fail.

Yes, that's right (well - we don't know if he's actually a candidate or not, as the process is shrouded in secrecy, but it looks as if this time it's true). He was nominated as Bishop of Reading about five years ago, but the Archbishop requested he step aside for the good of the church after an excessively nasty campaign mostly run by the evangelical conservatives. He was given the job of dean of St Albans as a consolation prize, where he's done a good job and where generally he's very well liked indeed.

He's also a fine theologian, a thoroughly decent person, and a damned good priest - and celibate, so they really have no reason to oppose him (he's on the record as saying he thinks the church has got homosexuality wrong, but then so are various other prominent figures, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, and no-one is seriously suggesting that he shouldn't be a bishop because of that).

Newspaper comments sections really do bring the epic fail, don't they.

I can believe that.

(Having only intermittent net access at work is doing wonders for my blood pressure. I am very rarely bored enough to read CiF at home.)
