I really do feel a bit bad about the emotional trauma I have put my innocent flist through this evening - but thank you for your kind words.
It struck me very strongly that while I could imagine, in various circumstances, Peter feeling that he couldn't go on (cf the scene in Busman's Honeymoon where he talks about how he could deal with anything while it was happening, but didn't care whether he lived or died when it had stopped) but I could never imagine him not caring about what would happen to those around him, which is why I made him choose the method he did, because while he would obviously not want any possibility that an innocent bystander could be accused of murder, he also seems quite concerned about what his mother would think about suicide. At least the way he chooses, there's enough posibility of an accident that a willing coroner can deal with it without a scandal - because the press could have made something very upsetting for all concerned about a story like that.
I think the bit that hurt me most writing was the paragraph about his dreams, though. That's about the nastiest I can imagine.
